How is Labbox transforming the way kids learn about electronics and engineering?

As our mission to educate and brighten young minds is something we hold very dear to our hearts, Labbox has put an incredible amount of work into creating an innovative approach to help children get started in engineering and technology.

Labbox is one of the first European hardware companies offering a complete, integrated, modular, multilingual home learning system in STEM.

As such, Labbox offers a subscription-based service, with kid-friendly electronic kits being delivered monthly to families, as well as an incredibly detailed, yet attractive and entertaining online curricula for children, where they are able to learn and understand real-world concepts of engineering and technology.

Each box in our subscription service is considered a learning stages and is linked in our subscription plans to specific learning objectives. This way we encourage lifetime learning and deliver educational value by allowing children to build their skills over a period of time. Our learning system is designed around two main components:

Lets talk about the physical experience, first!

Because our core value proposition is to teach kids how and why things work in technology, electronics and engineering fields, we redesigned the electronic blocks to support child learning and encourage experimentation while still preserving the opportunity to teach real world concepts that will bring kids closer to engineering.

How Labbox's electronic work?

From our experience working with over 5000 children in teaching them electronics we have seen that they have cognitive capabilities to understand how electronics works. As this is a creative process, kids need to have the environment and tools where they can experiment and express their creativity.

 Some trouble we encountered with the bare electronics and products like Arduinos and Raspberry Pi's:

  • Electronic components break easily (when kids make mistakes)
  • Electronic components are too small and fragile
  • Connecting electronic components requires special dangerous tools
  • Electronic circuits with electronic components are difficult to troubleshoot

As a response to this we have build a unique library of electronic blocks which address all of the above mentioned difficulties and came up with a new electronic block anatomy.

  • Labbox Blocks have protective circuitry so when kids make mistakes the electronic components are protected.
  • The size of our electronic blocks have been specifically designed to support fine motor skills of children ages 7+
  • All blocks are connected with magnetic snap connectors, which remove the need for special tools
  • All blocks have indicators, small color coded lights that light up to inform kids about the mistakes they make while building their circuits, which makes it easy to troublshoot.

Today Labbox has developed and produced over 30 most commonly used electronic blocks. The group of electronic blocks we redesigned are: LEDs, Buzzers, Switches, Acctuators, Sensors, Timers, Comparators as well as Microcontrollers.

In our subscription boxes, additional to the blocks, we include all the materials children need in order to create multiple functional projects. An example of a box content can be seen below.

With these blocks, as well as very carefully chosen projects and curricula,  kids can create numerous electronic projects as well as DIY (do it yourself) activities.

What about the digital platform?

The second component of our home learning system consists of our digital platform which kids get access to through Labboxes subscription service.

With every box kids get, they unlock a part of the curriculum on our digital platform. The curriculum is designed to be an interactive experience for children as well as a reward system for their work.
Everything starts with receiving a box where they get a card with a code to unlock an experience.

After unlocking the curriculum children get to access numerous different learning formats like: Lessons, Experiments, Video Content, Quizes, DIY Instructions as well as a place for the to engage with a Community of young engineers!
